HOW TO INCREASE THE GERMAN POPULATION?

Do you know that by 2050, Germany's population will shrink by 16 percent? Lower birth rates are one of the causes that makes Germany’s population decline rapidly. “Germany is the biggest country in the EU, with more than 82 million people, but it is likely to shed almost 12 million by 2060” (Traynor, 2008, para. 6). “Germany, which is home to 82 million people, has a birth rate of 1.4 percent, making it one of the most rapidly shrinking populations in the world” (DW-WORLD.DE, 2005, para.3). This current situation has become a big problem for Germany, because its decline in population in the future threatens its economy. “Demographic decline causes anxiety because it is thought to go hand-in-hand with economic decline” (BBC News, 2006, para. 6). Moreover, there are two more problems that Germany has to face, which are fewer working class people, and how immigrants will affect the German culture. The German government has tried to fix this matter recently. But it has not brought any effective results so far.

Since the German population has decreased, there have been a lot of opinions about this matter. Actually the German Government has tried to fix this problem for several years by offering women more benefits to have more kids. But, this solution is still not good enough for German women to decide to have more babies. “Germans have long had one of the lowest birth rates in the European Union at 1.3 children per woman — far below the “replacement rate” of 2.1 needed to keep the population stable and about half the rate of 40 years ago” (Kirschbaum, 2006, para. 6). Compared to other countries in Europe such as France and the United Kingdom; Germany has the lowest birth rate. “The UK population is increasing at a rate of around 1,000 people a day according to figures released by the National Statistics agency earlier this month” (Traynor, 2008, para. 17). “By 2060, the population of major European countries will be: UK 77 million, France 72” (Traynor, 2008, para. 19). That is one of the reasons that make Germany's population decrease. These European countries have also tried to raise their population in many ways. Some get good results such as France and the United Kingdom. Germany should imitate these countries’ methods in order to increase its own population. Now, German politicians and demographers have analyzed this matter and give numerous pieces of advice to fix this problem. They are hopeful that Germany will be able to raise its population before it becomes too late. There are many reasons that Germans do not want to have more children. Finding out the right solutions to fix the German population is a good way to increase its birth rates now, because these solutions will encourage Germans to have more children. These solutions are creating a good employment system with higher pay. Another good ways are giving German women more rest time at home after giving birth before coming back to their work, providing better childcare, and opening immigration.

First, Germany is one of the places where living expenses are costly. “Taxes are high, the cost of living is high” (workpermit.com, 2006, para. 5). Germans have to face a lot of kinds of fees and expenses to survive. To live in a modern society many Germans have to pay high fees. Many Germans criticize these fees because of their high cost. “German youth have long complained that they cannot find work that pays enough for the high cost of living in Germany” (workpermit.com, 2006, para. 5). This is also the reason Germans are afraid of having children, because they will not be able to afford their current living expenses. Therefore, many Germans need to get high salaries to keep up with their high cost of living expenses. Those things prove that Germans are worried about their budget before having children. This reason keeps them from not having children until their salaries becomes high enough in order to have kids. Moreover, German women are afraid of having children during the time they are working. They do not want to have babies after getting married or become a single parent, because they have to spend their time taking care of their children. The other reason is it is difficult for them to get back to work. Thus, giving German women more time off after they give birth can encourage them to have more babies. “At a time when many European countries as struggling to reverse falling birth rates, Germany’s coalition government agreed Wednesday to a financial package that will compensate professional women to take a year’s leave to have children and then return to work” (Dempsey, 2006, para. 1). There are huge amounts of Germans who work and have no children. They will have more babies if they can get the rest time for at least one year after giving birth. “At present, 30 percent of German working women are childless, according to Family Ministry statistics, and Germany lags far behind its European neighbors in term of birth rate” (Dempsey, 2006, para. 5). Therefore, paying high wages and giving German women more time off after they give birth will encourage Germans to have more babies.

Second, childcare facilities are one of the most important things that Germans think about before they decide to have children. “A lack of good childcare possibilities is another reason often cited for low birthrates and in recent months the German government has sworn to help families by offering more preschool and year-round school slots” (Biehl, 2005, para. 12). By giving Germans better childcare, this provides a good way to increase the German population. Full-time working parents really need full-time school for their children. Has the German government wondered where the children will go when their schools are closed and their parents still work? German parents face this problem all the time, because most schools are closed half of the day. “Most schools in Germany close in the afternoon, forcing one of the parents – usually the mother – to stay at home or else pay for child care. Even where all-day schools have been introduced over the past few years, often they provide neither lessons nor sports classes in the afternoon; children are simply supervised” (Dempsey, 2006, para. 11). German women certainly feel tired of taking care of kids and working at the same time; otherwise they have to pay for a babysitter, which costs them more money. That’s why they tend to have no kids, or just have one or two children. “Child care is available for children between 3 and 6 and operates only four hours a day, which is inadequate for parents who work full time” (Pearse, 2005, para. 12). Thus, German parents who work full time need better suited childcare facilities to accommodate their time. This allows Germans to go to work without being worried about baby-sitter fees and their children.

Third, by giving immigrants incentives to settle down in Germany, their addition can increase Germany's population effectively. “Germany must take in up to 50,000 highly skilled immigrants each year to overcome severe labor shortages caused by a shrinking population” (BBC News, 2001, para. 1). There is still argument about this matter, because Germans try to keep their culture. German Nationalists do not agree with this issue, because it hard to support the idea that young generation of Germans will be mixed-race in the future. In fact, there are many ways to accept immigrants who come and settle down in Germany without getting married with Germans. The other way can be to lure couples that are rich, skillful, and want to move to Germany to get a high living standard, which is less in their country. “Experts have argued that Germany may need massive immigration of skilled labour to stave off economic decline and to maintain the lavish social security net and pensions system” (BBC News, 2001, para. 6). “We must recognise that to secure our prosperity, our future, we are dependent on people from other countries with skills that we desperately need,” said Commission chair Rita Suessmuth. Therefore, that does not mean any people can come to Germany. These immigrants must be young, rich or skillful. Immigrants will help increase the number of working people, but will also raise the German population in a short amount of time. “Since the 1990s, analysts have pointed to Germany's ongoing need for immigrants to bolster economic development and maintain a dynamic workforce, given the rapid aging of the country's population” (Oezcan, 2004, para. 1). This policy is being carried out by Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom. For example, Australia issues a immigration regulation which shows how to get acceptance from the Australian Embassy and become Australian citizens. “Australia's general skilled migration program targets people who are highly skilled, are under 45 years of age, have a high level of English language ability and who will quickly make a contribution to the Australian economy. Information regarding Migrating to Australia is available on the DIAC main website” (Autralian Embassy Vietnam, 2008, para. 25). With an effective immigration policy, their population has increased recently. “Successful points-based recruiting programs, such as those implemented by Canada, Australia and New Zealand, are cited and being studied as models. Great Britain and other westernized countries are already taking steps in that direction” (workpermit.com, 2006, para. 13). Open immigration and an effective way to control it, could bring effective results for increasing German population and its economy as well. With that fact, immigration can also lead to rapid economic growth for Germany.

In conclusion, even though low birth rate still poses a serious problem for Germany, there are still many solutions Germany can use to fix this problem. Germany should think about those solutions to make its replacement fertility grow. These solutions, giving Germans higher wages, giving German women a year to rest after giving birth, promoting a childcare system to meet the German parents’ demand, and luring rich, young, skillful immigrants to Germany are the good ways to increase its population.

The most anxious thing in my life!!!

I had never been far away from my country before I came to the US. When I came here, every thing was so strange for me such as culture, food, habits. My first trip began from Chicago. I had to take a train to go to Carbondale alone. When I came here. I met Anna (that is you). You helped me to carry my stuff and take me to University Hall. I did say thank you to you, but I will never forget that day. You are the first American person who gave me a very good impression because of your helping and your caring.

Like every Vietnamese people in my country, I am always afraid to ask people for help, because I do not want to disturb people. When I came University Hall, I could not eat American food, I could not contact my friends in Chicago, my family in Vietnam. But, I did not ask you for help, even Mrs Joy. I was unhappy because there were no internet, no cell phone, even phone. I became feel alone and unhappy. I got stressful and could not eat. I was shock.

The first week in Carbondale seemed a nightmare in my life because I was getting nervous. I just eat one meal a day with bread and cheese which I had never eaten in my country (I mean I do not like it at all). I lost weight and be nervous at the same time. I cried everyday. The only thing that I could do at that time was reading The Bible. I thought of Jesus. He is only my friend at that time, because there is only him can listen to me, help me get over all my trouble things.

I did get nervous time in my life. It was my experience. It's good for me, because there are a lot of people who are willing to help me in the first time I came to the US.

CESL-THE PLACE FOR PEOPLE TO COME AND GO

If I have a chance, I would say CESL is the good place for people to study and ... go. I know that true and make me feel sad whenever I think about it. Cesl is a good place for people come to study, prepare before going to university in the US.

Cesl is the place that bring me a wonderful time in the US. Since I came to Cesl, I earned a lot of high score that I haven't gotten in my country. That really encourage me study, work hard and I have chance to earn much good grade. Cesl is the place where students feel free to talk, to ask, even to complain. It is also the place where students are pampered by "Tea time" with a lot of cookies, coffee, tea. Students can chat each other or chat with their teachers. The time that I study here is soooo great.

The other good thing is there are many cesl instructors who are very nice and happy all the time. The teachers do know how tressful in class and shock culture, so they are very nice. They are willing to hel students to understand and get over from their problem. I always see them with their smiles. I feel free to ask to understand the lessons. Also, they are willing to help me to study by showing some good material that I can learn from.

There are always both sides. When people get sucess from cesl, they will go to siu or other school, or go back their country. It is a sad thing that I always get when i finish each term. I see my friends come and go. It seems I have no chance to chat with them or work with them anymore. Students are always busy with their stuff such as applying for school, doing homework or travelling. That is truly make me feel sad.

No matter what has happened. I think It is the wonderful time for me to study here. I have learnt a lot, have meet many people from many countries, had a lot of paties,had chances to introduce my country's culture. "Go and learn" is a piece of advice that my parents gave me when I was going to put my feet on the airplane to come here. I did get it from cesl. Thanks everyone who are my friends, my "enemies" in class, and my teachers.

Question #4

Do you believe that I did not have any Valentines day in my country. When I was in high school, I even did not cerebrate this day. After that, when I went to university, I start knowing about this special day and people begin to pay attention to it. However, it seems for people who are in love. We do not cerebrate each other in family. People also give chocolate and eat out in this day. Men suppose to buy flowers for women and take their girlfriends or wives to eat out. There are many activities for couple to enjoy in this day. The most interesting thing I ever known is there was a competition that people write nice letter for their lover. The best letter will be shown. The win couple can get a good traveling for free. So that they have more time to be together. 

Since I came to the US, everything seems to be different. I was happy a lot when I received a nice card from Gretchen, my Core teacher in CESl. I got surprised to know that American cerebrate each other in this day. They can give card, gift each other. I got more amazed to know there are a lot of couple came to restaurants to cheer each other. When I came to Thai Taste Restaurant, I saw many couple are waiting for their seats. It is so wonderful!!!!

I am lucky to come here to know more about culture. It is very awesome because people can express their love in this day in very nice ways. 

 

Response Assignment

I choose Barbara’s summary to do this assignment because I thought France, the country she wrote about, has the same problem as Germany. The article’s title is “France: the most fertile nation in the European Union”. I was surprised to know French population is increasing now. The birth fertility rate is higher than before. Barbara says there are three reasons for France to increase its population its birth rate is high, people have children without getting marriages, and they are encouraged by the French Government. She also mentions we can control our country’s population in her conclusion.

It is very interesting for me to write about Barbara’s work. I learnt more when I read her summary and response. She has strong ideas about three main reasons that French population is increasing nowadays. However, I think there is one more reason that makes French population grows up. It is immigration. People still want to come to France to settle down, because there are good living standard and high education. France inherits a long history, and this country is very beautiful. That is why immigrants want to come to this country for many reasons such as getting high education, getting good jobs, and living in a safe, beautiful place.

What solutions for Germany when its population declines?

In Reville’s (2008) article, “Too few births to prop up EU population,” he discusses the EU’s decline in population. The young generation will face problems in the future because of this decline. He shows us the result of Eurostat Press Office’s research about EU’s population. It says EU countries’ population will decrease by 2060. The EU will get low crude birth rates while crude death rates will increase. The number of old people will rise higher than the number of young people by 2060. The number of workers in the EU will decline by 2030. Eurostat predicts that the UK will get the largest population increase in Europe while Germany’s population will lessen. As a result, some European countries such as Sweden and Russia introduced programs that will encourage people to have more children. Reville concludes that the low fertility rates happen because of many factors in the modern life such as women going out to work. These factors make the population decline in European countries.

In 2006, I met my cousin who had lived in Germany for four years. She decided to move to Germany to settle down because her mother has been there before. She told me about her life in Germany. She was out of a job. I can imagine how hard her life is in Germany because of her lacking employment. That is why she decided not to have any more children. I wonder how many Germans are thinking like her. Is that the reason the German population has declined? The German government is concerned about this decline. For me, I agree with the number that is shown by Reville's article as well as his concerns. Germany will face problems from the low replacement fertility rates. I think the German government should look into other solutions for this problem such as opening immigration, giving people more jobs with higher salary, and providing school for babies with low fees.

First, the German government should think about opening immigration. This solution is not only good for increasing the German population, but also would be helpful for its economy. How immigration law is made is very important. Opening immigration does not mean allowing any people to come to Germany easily. People who are from the other countries will be able to settle down in Germany if they satisfy German immigration law. Legal immigrants could be skillful, knowledgeable, or wealthy people. These useful people have ability to contribute to Germany in population as well as economy.

Second, Germany should provide more available jobs with high salary for people. Many couples do not have more babies because the women are out of jobs. Bringing up children costs them much money. They are afraid that they cannot afford their living expenses with large families. For example, if my cousin had a good job in Germany, she would bear more children. She is willing to do that because she and her husband are still young. She said there is some benefit for women who have more kids, but that program does not give enough money for her family. Therefore, if German people can earn a lot of money, they will think about having more children.

Third, more childcare facilities should be opened for eighteen-month-old children. Some women do not want to have more babies because they are tired of taking care of their children. Moreover, it takes a long time for women to bear babies and take care of them until the kids are four years old. Therefore, providing more childcare facilities that accept taking care of babies from eighteen months and up is the good way. After giving birth and raising a baby for eighteen months, German women can come back to work and earn money.

In conclusion, trying to get a high birth rate is only one way to increase the German population. There are some solutions for Germany to increase its population, such as getting more immigrants, making available good jobs for Germans, and building more childcare facilities for eighteen-month-old kids. If German people can earn a lot of money, afford their living cost and send their kids to school, they will be happy to get more children. Besides, opening immigration is a good way to get more skillful, knowledge, and rich people. It also is useful for the German economy.

"Be my girlfriend!!!!" - "Oh noooooooooooooo".

Your assignment at this time is difficult for me because it is hard to tell the confusing thing. Since I came to the US, I have met a lot of things that were confused me. Some were funny. Others made me be angry at myself. This is one of case that I had trouble. It did not hurt me, but made me worried and thought about it too much.

I met an old man when I came to the church. I talked to him several times. We got to know each other and were friendly. I thought he was like my dad. He was kind and compassionate. I am always smiling when I talk to people. That was why he could feel comfortable to chat with me. Once day, he told me "I like you. Be my girl friend". I really got surprised, angry and felt scared after that. From that day, I avoid meeting him. I still came to church but got out immediately when the mass was done. The relationship was stuck. I did not want to meet him any more. I also did not receive any complain from him after I suddenly met him again in one month later. I told myself: "Well, everything is ok now". But, I did not want to talk to him any way. This case made me so embarrass that I could not tell any one about it. I keep it in my mind. Some day, I heard him left Carbondale. I do not know where he is now.

I would still be embarrass till I talked to the another man. He and his wife live in Carbondale. They are kind and friendly people. Once day, when I chatted with him. He said: "You are very friendly, you can be my girlfriend". I got angry again and shouted at him "NO KIDDING". He responded by a friendly smile and said "no kidding". I am truly mad at him at that time. I told myself "Oh my Gods. Noooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!", because he and his wife are my good friends. I got home, called to my friend who are his friend and talked about that. My female friend said he always said that. He usually give her daughter a hug and said "Oh, my girlfriend!". Her daughter is only 5 years old.

I felt embarrass after that. I did not know how to say sorry to him as well as the man I met at the church. I did misunderstand them because of culture. In my country, when people say that, it is very seriuos. It just use for people who wants to date.

I learnt more thing about American culture from these cases. They were helpful for me.

Can population kill people?

In the article “Global Overpopulation,” Cara Swann mentions that the world’s population is increasing day by day for many reasons. She says being childfree is the good way to decrease population nowadays. Moreover, she states that overpopulation also causes some bad problems for people and the environment as well. First, Swann tells us the fact that there are five babies who are born in every single second while two people die; therefore, the world’s population growth certainly is happening in every second and makes its population increase day by day. Second, she shows that the more people are born the greater the amount of trees are cut down, the more natural resources are used, and the more trash is thrown away. These things absolutely affect our environment. Third, she talks about the solutions for the above population troubles by stating that we should to control the birth rate. She also tells us about some reasons that cause overpopulation in the world such as religion and lack of education.

Have you ever thought that a country could destroy itself because of its population? I read Easter Island’s story in writing class last week. It was about Easter Island, a beautiful country, which had a big problem because of its environment. People in this country gradually died because of lacking food. One reason that led to this trouble is population. This article really made me amazed and I had to think about environment more than before. The fact is that overpopulation causes many troubles for people because the more babies are born; the more natural resources are used. Overpopulation can lead many problems such as pollution, famine, and being poor in some developed countries. Thus, I partially agree with Cara Swann. In my opinion, overpopulation happens because of three reasons: religious belief, lack of education, and early-married status.

First, in some religious beliefs, people believe that they are not allowed to control their birth rate by some scientific methods. Except for the original method that is showed by the Bible, they do not use any ways to stop giving birth. For example, there is a group of people who are Catholic in my country, who give birth without control. Each family has from 3 to 5 members. They do not care about the Government Issues in which a couple can get more benefit if they have only two children. Their beliefs are strongly enough to keep giving birth and make the population grow day by day.

Second, most developing countries do not have good education systems in which people are educated to control their birth rate when they get married. Even high school students are not told how to avoid being pregnant. As a result, population is increasing gradually.

Third, the situation of lack of education easily to leads to early-married status. People usually get married when they are only eighteen years old or less than that if the law allows doing that. If women get married early, they probably have more than three children in their family. Controlling the early-married status will be a good way to control the birth rate.

In conclusion, overpopulation happens because of three causes, religious belief, lack of education, and early-married status. Overpopulation can cause some bad things to the environment. Controlling the birth rate is one of the good ways to protect our environment and save our earth.

What will happen to Germany when its fertility replacement rate is below fertility rate?

Reville’s (2008) article “Fewer children not the answer to global warming,” he discusses how the population in some European countries is at its lowest point. That is a massive problem that European governments must solve. First, he shows that world population growth will increase to nine billion by 2050. Also, population growth is high among poor people in least developed countries. However, he states that some people support boosting birth rates in the developed countries where the population has declined. Second, he claims that it is necessary to keep the birth rate at an average of 2.1 children, because some developing countries will get below replacement rates, such as Japan, Italy, Germany, and Spain. Third, he argues that low birth rate in these countries will cause calamitous effects, so these governments concern it. They encourage women to have more kids. Finally, Reville states that when fertility rates are below replacement rates, there are fewer available working people to pay taxes and welfare. He affirms that the solution for the global warming is not to decrease population in the world.

Have you ever thought about a society in which there are more old people than young? What do you think will happen to this society? That is a difficult question that many governments face when they have to balance between young and old people. One country facing this dilemma is Germany. In “German birth rate falls to lowest in Europe” the author claims “Germany now has the lowest birth rate in Europe, with 8.5 births per 1,000 inhabitants” (Harding, 2006, para.2). The German government is worried about this and is trying to boost its birth rate. Controlling population is a controversial issue. Personally, I agree with the Reville because I believe that raising the German population at this time is necessary for three main reasons: balancing the working class people, improving economy, and keeping its culture. 

To begin with, it is difficult for Germany when the population of working class people decreases gradually. A consequence of less people being born there is fewer people going to work. When there are a few people who can work, employers have to pay more for capable workers. Due to the shortage of capable workers, there will be less competition among applicants for good jobs. This will cause people to become less qualified for jobs. For example, the people who graduated from high schools in Germany can get a job easily while in America people need bachelor’s degree to get good jobs. Thus, intellectual standards will fall when the German population decreases.

             Second, there are fewer young people working and paying taxes that will pay for the increase in welfare, retirement, and health care for old people. That means there will be less money in the future for these programs. The German government will have to get this money in other ways. At that time welfare, and retirement fees for old people will be cut. That means young people in their family will be responsible for their parents. The economy will be down because people are spending their money only on their living expenses. For example, young people cannot spend their money on traveling or entertainment because they have to save their money for their parents in case of emergency. It is dangerous for the German economy when young people make less money.

             Finally, immigrants will affect the German culture when fewer native German people are born in the future. Incoming immigrants can change the traditional customs. When fewer native German people are born, their race will be shrunk. Young Germans can get married to other nationalities, causing their culture to change in the future. Keeping a high fertility rate will help Germany keep their culture for a long time.

             In conclusion, Germany faces a massive problem with low birth rate. The low birth fertility rates will affect many aspects of German life such as fewer young working class people, economy problems, and mixed culture. The German government has to find appropriate solutions for this problem.

How deliciuos Vietnamese food is!!!!!!!!!!!!

"If I had a chance I would open a Vietnamese restaurant in Carbondale" was a short paragraph I wrote in AE2 class on September. Vietnamese food is always in my mind. I love it, I cook it every week. When I have chance, I would rather cook my country's food for my friend who live in the United State. I would love to let them know how it staste and why it is cooked by those ways. That was why when Julie asked me to write a paragraph, I could write about it right away. I love Vietnamese food for two reasons: It is delicious, good for health.

First, Vietnamese food is deliciuos because there are many kinds of food. Each of them has its own taste. Each region has its own food and all taste is so good. Noodle is the most kind of food i do love. Every region has typical noodle. In North Vietnam, there are Pho which is cooked with beef, onion, ginger, and some herb. This recipe makes Pho become the most famous dish in Vietnam. Central area has Bun Bo Hue that was known from the Period of the King in Vietnam. Its taste is hot and spicy, and delicious. In South, we have Hu Tieu. I heard it came from Campodia. But, now it is known as Vietnamese Food. These kinds of food are interesting for tourist when they come to my country.

Second, Vietnamese food is very good for your health, because each dish has much vegetable in it. Some kind of vegetable help you avoid having trouble with your tummy when you eat. Also, it makes its taste more delicious. For example, Pho has cinnamon, onion, lemon, and bean sprouts. These vegetable are not only delicious but also good for our health. 

In conclusion, I can say Vietnamese food is one of my favorite food. I like it so much that i learn how to cook. I can cook Pho, Bun Bo Hue, and Hu Tieu. I am always willing to do that when I have party. I also enjoy these food because they are delicious and good for my health.
